Each day in America, 15.1 million children go home to an empty house afterschool. As a result, 26 percent of America’s schoolchildren are unsupervised in the afternoon. These unsupervised hours are the time when youth are most likely to engage in risky behavior, commit juvenile crimes, or be victims of crimes. (America after 3pm, 2009) The availability of afterschool programs has improved over the last five years and families are taking advantage. However, there are not enough programs to meet the need.
The Miles Ahead Youth Organization (MAYO) will help fill this void by providing a foundation where children, regardless of their socioeconomic status, can develop skill sets, build strong character, and achieve their goals. The center will make available essential educational, health & wellness, mentoring, and athletic opportunities to children between the ages of 5 to 17. Children exposed to this well-rounded environment will be able to execute tasks, make proper decisions, work to master challenges, and become diligent and resilient young men and women.
